Good Heavens

Do we never eat dinner around here any more? Of course we do, but somehow my blogging has gone on summer vacation. I think you can guess what we had for dinner this week; fill in one of the following: "We had broiled (skirt steak/lamb chops/chicken) with (brown rice/quinoa/barley) and roasted (turnips/carrots/shitaakes/fennel/cauliflower/broccoli).

What do you do with the Barley? Brown rice and quinoa I love, but barley ends up being ... well, not so exciting, soggy, lacking crunch and texture.

BTW, this article by Bittman pretty much sums up my attitude towards meat these days - I like it but I don't want it dominant. Whenever I get some I keep adding vegetables until it feels small in comparison. I guess I really am not a meat and potatoes kind of guy. That said, when I cook non-ethnic American, I think I use the same food mad-libs that you do.
